My golden era was Valerie Singleton, John Noakes, and Peter Purves - though I'm old enough to remember rushing home from school to watch Val with Christopher Trace (and Petra the dog). Chris had to resign when it was announced that he was getting divorced - shocking in those days. Val managed to keep quiet her affair with Peter Purves (of Doctor Who fame) and the fact that she had an abortion during her time on Blue Peter - that revelation would have brought the sky crashing down!
ReplyDeleteNo offense, Urban, but blimey you're showing your age! I'm a BIG Blue Peter fan, and I know that Val and Chris started in 1962. Oh, and I know scandal is nothing new to BP, either. Chris's divorce was never actually announced, but he had had an affair with a woman during the very first Blue Peter Expedition (which I hear they've dropped, now, unfortunately; those were my vicarious Summer Holidays) to Norway. I knew that Val had had an affair, but I had no idea she and Peter were bonking! Did you know, that Val replaced Anita West, who was the "secret presenter", hidden from official history for thirty-six years? Secret because it came out that she was a divorcee, AND her ex-husband was a Black Jazz man! Could you imagine the viewer outrage! West only lasted six months.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think how everyone was up in arms about Richard Bacon's cocaine binge, you've just got to laugh. About 75% of the presenters have had to leave in private "disgrace", everything from drink and drugs to gay porn... And yet never a word of it to the children - it's what makes Blue Peter to effortlessly British!
